The owner is keen to sell and open to sensible offers.
In 1989 Hispaniola sailed out of Palma after a two-year refit and her owners fell completely in love with her. Thirty-seven years, countless Balearic anchorages and one very well-maintained classic yacht later, she is ready for her next family.
Hispaniola is a 1962 Sparkman & Stephens 40 yawl — one of three sisterships built by Astilleros Gallart of Mataró, a yard whose shipwrights trained at Camper & Nicholsons. Iroko planking on timber frames, built to the same exacting standard as the great British wooden yachts of the era. Her long keel, deep sections and yawl rig give her the seakeeping that made S&S designs the choice for serious offshore passages on both sides of the Atlantic.
She is not a project. The family have maintained her to a standard that is rare in the classic boat world, with a comprehensive log of all work from 2018 to 2026 — full invoices and inspection reports included. Follow her story on Instagram: @Hispaniola1962.
The structural work has been done properly. Hull planking was comprehensively renewed in 2019 (full plank replacement and re-caulking, €24,000). In 2025–26 the topsides were refinished in Awlgrip, masts unstepped for rigging inspection, fresh antifouling applied and new zinc anodes fitted throughout. The engine is a Volvo Penta TMD22A/MS2, fully overhauled in 2022 with a new turbocharger and new starter motor in 2024. Sail wardrobe is Quantum Terylene throughout — mainsail, mizzen, furling genoa, jib, Code 0, drifter and trysail.
A full independent pre-sale survey was carried out in August 2024 by Miquel Antonio i Bonet, Naval Engineer (COPITN nº2192).
